It's interesting as a story just as it is, Vogue, but you need detail...
I can't "see" the layout of this area. It might be helpful to have a map, or panoramic overviews so we readers can visualize the boot's location in the overall context. Perhaps you can get permission from the visitor's bureau to use a map from their brochure (if there is one).
Also, it would be good to know the names of establishments, maybe a footnote with contact info that future visitors could look for. Photos are so useful! I like the ones you've included -- and the story of the two Swiss ladies burning their clothes, including the hiking boots is perfect.

I read this from the beginning, and I think it's an great idea to combine the writing of your travels with the 'personal', even if it's an invention. Your discussion of the pilgrimage along the Camino de Santiago and it's historical background is particularly interesting...
