Will,
I have a theory. Perhaps, taking into consideration the half of marriages that are lifelong, those who find themselves divorced or divorcing, has at least one partner who is so severely flawed, that they serially marry, out of necessity. These individuals cannot sustain a lasting relationship, with anyone. Remember, it takes both spouses pulling together, devoted to each other, forgiving of foibles and irritating behaviors, patience, etc. etc. to make a marriage work. One partner who is incapable of, or disinclined, to do their part, dooms each marriage to fail, over and over again. These people skew the statistics, because sucessful marriages, only are counted once.
