I see nothing at all that says we will end up in that bad of shape. Out society is going to have to find way to balance it all out and make it work. We are not going to be able to go back to how it was.
The problems you talk about are all left over irresponsibility from the Regan years. People were being told (And they still are being told ) that all they need to do is get more credit cards and create more debt and their lives will be good. Yet no one ever pushes the actual responsibility that needs to go with credit. Every where one turns now days there are people pushing you to get new credit cards to pay off yours bills. Then of course you have the simple fact that Big Business is not even trying to be responsible at all. As you pointed out, when PEOPLE have income that hey can spend it stimulates the economy. Well after these Eight years with Bush, he helped to make it so the wage gaped widen, with the wealthier becoming far wealthier while the working class' wealth was not growing. When you factor in inflation, that is not a good thing at all. So if your big companies want to do good, they need to be responsible and help stimulate the economy by paying better. Well what happens is Big Business acts irresponsibly waits for the government to have to come in and fix it all (While they complain about Big Government and call is socialism, even though they are basically begging for it) and then they distance themselves from what they did as much as possible, hoping to hide their irresponsibility.
Now while I don't think it will be smooth sailing, I see nothing that suggests we will be in as bad of shape as you are predicting. We are adaptable and we will adapt our system to fit the changing needs of it. That is why it s far better that the Democrats are in power right now, since the Republicans don't want to adapt and fight needed change that would be for the best. And creating universal health care in this country is a step in the right direction to clean up the mess and helping to build a stronger economy. We need to see more steps like that being taken right now.

Wow, what a comment! Talk about hitting the nail on the head, wow! I really can not add anything else to this excellent reply that would be worthy. You explained it exactly! Brilliant explanation!
Thanks cpklapper!

Re: this morning -- unemployment claims have dropped-
Where are all the jobs obama promised? Where are they? I know we would have been better off with a Republican administration across the board not just the economy. We would not have the trillion $ debt we are under now. You thought Bush spent money and had big government? obama makes him look like a tightwad! Everything obama has done is not only wrong for the nation but so far of course. This guy is ridiculous. Heck, if we absolutely had to have a democrat in office we would have been better off with Clinton. I argued with all the conservative talk show host before the election about the continual bashing of Hitlery. I knew they were ignoring the real danger which has come forth now. However, you voted this guy in so you will continue to be on the defensive until he is gone. obama is a joke!

Re: RSM, obviously you don't listen to the economists.
Actually, Kooka, only certain economists are saying that, most of them connected to the Obama administration. A similar thing happened with the Hoover administration and the "experts" that they trotted out to show that the recession had ended and that "prosperity is just around the corner".
Having studied the economy for quite some time, I can tell you that a credit crunch and unemployment are a deadly combination, especially without populist measures to put money in the hands of the unemployed and other cash-strapped Americans while excluding national companies from the local economy. The talking heads can talk about "consumer confidence" until the cows come home, but there is not going to be an increase in spending until people have incomes (of any kind) which will keep them in their homes, keep the creditors at bay, keep their families from starving and from freezing and have something left over for several months to build up reserves in lieu of credit for the next bout of unemployment. And without that increase in spending by Americans, there will not be a depletion of inventory. Without a depletion of inventory, there will not be a resumption of production. Without a resumption of production, there will not be an increase in domestic manufacturing employment to provide the wage income to drive us out of the depression.
Sorry, Kooka, we are in a heap load of trouble in many ways far worse than Great Depression I. Everything in the preceding paragraph must be realized in local economies in order for it to have an effect. National companies have pretty much destroyed that possibility and the international companies have completed that devastation.
It is unlikely if not impossible for us to recover from a financial collapse with a service economy controlled by national companies.

this morning -- unemployment claims have dropped-
the rate of unemployment is lessening --- fewer each month --
people who are unemployed aren't of course happy with any of this news -- they are still unemployed.
but it seems you keep saying we would have been better under a Republican Administration that probably would have taken the same actions.

Re: RSM, obviously you don't listen to the economists.
I am simply pointing out what I am seeing. Remember the Doobie Brothers song and the verse "I'm blind and I don't like what I think I see"? Well, this is what I am saying. I could not care less what economist say. I am convinced you will see a huge upswing in the economy followed by a bigger crash afterwards. I have always thought that no matter who the president is, the economy is driven my supply and demand and the people. You will see this occur again. The only problem is if we are in a depression in 2012 you will still be blaming it on Bush even though your boy is at the helm. That will be so wrong.

Exactly Kabu. I do not care if someone wants to blame Bush or whomever but I do know who is in charge now and all I am asking is for this administration to tell the truth because what they are trying to tell us or sell us is NOT what I am seeing. I honestly think you will see a great increase in the economy just before a bigger drop than what we had before. I really do think that is what we will see so look at things come spring or summer of 2010 and look for the downfall. All I am saying is do not lie to the American public about the true status of the economy and I feel that is what obama is doing.

RSM, obviously you don't listen to the economists.
The economists are all for the most part saying we are headed out of the recession, but that due to the nature of such things, we will still have to go through a drop in unemployment until it all balances out. And if you actually study economy, you would understand that that is how such things work. Just becasue the recession itself might be over does not mean that magically over night all the companies that have been hurt by it will suddenly turn around and be doing well.

This is something that I keep warning my son about. Nothing really has been
changed and we are going to goback into recession around the world unless there are some big changes made. I don't know what they should be but I do know that going along as it used to be is wrong. The G20 meeting last week seems to me to have been a waste of time.I think that they achieved nothing.
