The quote from Benjamin Franklin proves the reason for the monument love. People, mostly later immigrants that do not share the first faith of the settlers (and even the Spanish that sold the land in the South believed in the Roman Catholic faith) emigrated mostly in the mid 19th century for religious freedom. A large percentage of the descendants of the Puritans (the Congregational Church), Northern Europeans, Easterners, and the immigrants from Southern Europe still retain the right to not believe as well today. And, they can talk about it and prosthetize. Similarly to the respect that many people pay to statues of Christopher Columbus the cross does go back to the founding of the United States of America. My uncles were Masons. My uncle’s lodge attended services at a Moravian church. They recognized the cross as one of the symbols in the history of America love. I recognize the Masonic Lodge as a religion. BC-A, Top of the Stairs
