Never mind the Braunschweiger, the story by itself was fascinating.

Re: BC-A
I've never heard of that brand, probably because I've never been to the Northeast.  But here is a suggestion on best way to eat it, from a lover of the product:
liverwurst, vidalia onion slices on pumpernickel or marble rye with Hellman's mayo and a spicy brown mustard, Claussen's kosher dill pickle and a few chips added to the plate.  Doesn't that sound great.

Re: Tzippy
If it's your first time, buy a small amount.  A lot of people do not have a taste for it.

Re: lustorlove
Actually, I've always considered liverwurst, goose liver, pâté de foie gras, Braunschweiger, and anything else that you might want to call it, a delicacy.  Being half Czech, I grew up on liver and things made with it.  One of my mom's favorite things to make was liver dumplings and my dad loved liver and onions.  I stay away from it now because it is not good for my gall bladder--too rich.

Re: Samantha
I don't know about "the sweet of me".  I did it because I wanted to.  She was sweet to stop and talk with me after all those years.  I found out that she now lives within walking distance of me, with a daughter of hers.

yes, exactly!  You took us all with you.  I loved it.  That
was so sweet of you to still talk to Dorothy May.

I too love this story of yours. It is so well written with all the little details that make it so "alive", I felt as if I was on the bench with you and the hired help. Thanks.

Taps - how wonderful of you...it's awful to be segregated.

That's really neat how you remembered her based off of what she liked to eat and what she introduced you to.

Taps

Loved this post from beginning to end – loved following along your thoughts, memory, and careful and delightful description of Dorothy May.  And, of course, you held my attention as I needed to find out what at barnswagger was…..

I shoulda known...
But it was a complete surprise to find out you meant braunschweiger. Loved this blog, reminder of a time when we lived in blissful ignorance of the mean divisions in our society.

LOL! Loved the mispronunciation for the barnswagger - I'll never look at a goose again without thinking of it! A great story, and you do it so well. I imagine you had quite a nice chat with your friend?

Pricesless Taps and so well written
It felt like I was watching the story unfold not just read it. There has never been a better time to temind ourselves what it was like for a large number of fellow human beings to be excluded, branded as inferior and not worthy of using the basic facilities that the majority took forgranted. You should write more about this period, your innocence and unawareness of it makes your recollections so bitter-sweet!
