I cannot say I've been completely honest here. Some things I have to omit because they are too detailed and could expose my identity.

a good way to sum it up

I'll admit it...I've lied a few times in my life.
and you know what?  I'll usually feel so guilty about it that I end telling the truth anyway!  haha

Taps

This post certainly invoked some interesting comments…I suspect the 97% who claim to not lie were dismissing all those little “white” lies; the excuses we make, for example, for not being able to attend an event versus simply saying “no thank you”, or the empty compliments or affirmations we offer someone when they happen to ask “how do you like my new hairdo?”  And why are they called white lies anyway….?  What could possibly be pure about an untruth?

Re: Antipodean
I haven't seen your name before.  You must be fairly new to Blogit.  Welcome.  That's a pretty funny comment from your friend.

Good post!
A friend of mine once said: 'I don't know how the Prime Minister gets away with it. When I lie I'm f......... within 24 hours!'

Re: gapcohen
I, for one, understand and join in that kind of fun--be it right or wrong.

I lie every day; when a random solicitor calls and asks, "Is Ms. Cohen home?" and I say, "no, she's not home right now, can I take a message?".  There are lies that hurt and others that prevent hurt (white lies), and one just has to understand the difference!  Mal

As I commented to snowview, Don't ask me!  I'm not an authority on the subject.  Mostly I just have questions.  That's why I got into the subject.  LOL

I think you may be right, but I think it evolves into more than that.

Re: Corbin_Dallas
If one is getting technical, I would say that it depends on how it's labeled--under fiction, just a good story--under politics & news, definitely.

Hmmmmm??
Couldn't "fiction" be considered a type of lie?

posted by Corbin_Dallas on September 18, 2009 at 5:26 AM | link to this | reply

I've come to believe the surest sign that someone is lying is
when they accuse you. I learned this lesson the hard way, when someone I trusted absolutely turned my safe harbor into a dangerous uncharted reef.

Interesting! What about white lies, which are often a survival strategy!

To Philo man is the only creature endowed with freedom to act, and as such he is responsible for his action and “very properly receives blame for the offences which he designedly commits.”

I think the root of most lies derives from inner fears.

On the internet is hard to know if someone is lying be it a dating site or just talking to someone you have never met, you can say anything.  With me I try to very honest and sometimes it gets me in trouble

Social lies e.g. 'I cannot come keep our appointment,because....' are easy (lazy, cowardly?) ways out of difficult situations. Just imagine saying 'I do not intend to keep our appointment, shouldn't have made it in the first place, because I think you are.....'

TAPS

I am reminded of Shakira's Hips Don't Lie, must be true because people were obliged to award her with the 2007 Grammy Award. Hips, in fact, mute, never learnt to lie. Great Philo, isn't it?

Lies are as old as humanity... the serpent lied to Eve... Eve to Adam and so on and so forth . I think we all lie at one time or another... I try not to unless I have to in order to spare someone else hurt or myself embarrassment... like when I don't feel like going to a party and I feign a bad headache... or if I have a dentist appointment I want to escape from and I call and tell them I have the stomach virus  ( Hmmm  do you think my dentist is in blogit???) but to intentionally lie to get things our of others is , in my book, the lowest think that one can do.  Obama lying?  Maybe... but I feel it was not the time or the place to call him on it... though it was a great forum to be heard... if as the opposition claims there is a conspiracy from the media to protect the president.  The whole thing sounds a little crazy... conspiracies and hidden lies.... too much drama for me :-)

TAPS
I've never caught a fellow member in an outright lie, but I have a time or too stumbled upon glaring inconsistencies. What troubles me is  the lunacy some members spew because they actually believe it.
