I have agreed with your viewpoint until recently . . .
but then the comparison to Vietnam comes up -- and the possibility that this could be long, drawn out, and not won.

Bush's ignoring Afghanistan in favor of the illegal invasion of Iraq didn't help things any.  There could have been more stability had he concentrated on the former.  But even then, the situation would probably have remained the same in essence as it is now.

Maybe a new strategy is necessary rather than a wholly military one.

(this wouldn't have happened if we had helped after they repelled the Soviets.)
