Jesus came to serve, and on 9/12, so many stepped up to serve. . .
I personally think service to others is a beautiful thing.  I don't mind it being coincided with 9/11, because that tragedy caused many people across the country to be shaken out of their selfish ways and into serving others. . .at least for a time.  I don't think that anyone who witnessed it will ever forget it.  My concern is for the ones who were young.  Already my 8th grade students don't remember that day, beyond something they learned in a history class.  We all tend to forget the sacrifices that people make in times of war, when they are not something we truly experienced ourselves.  We must keep 9/11 and the unity we had on 9/12 alive for our children.

I see you prefer it to be a memorial to fear and keep us all in abject fear
I like the idea of a National Day of Service -- it is a positive commemoration rather than the negative connotation mentioned -- "fear".

maybe you should read 1984, where the government kept people loyal by having war with first, one foreign country, then another -- a cycle of fear of rotating enemies, sort of like Bush did with Iraq, then tried to do with Iran.
