I agree with elinjo..
Believing in God and doing the rituals is just the same principal with saying 'I Love You' and acting towards the person in loving behaviour.. Both must be done simultaneously to present the fact that our mind, our tongue and our body are thinking, feeling and expressing the exact same thing.. no lies, no pretense..

Sweetie, I don't know
I guess because religion is man made....and like man, it is imperfect.
If you are dealing with matters of the spirit, much better to go with simple spirituality.
