Wasn't this country established/formalized/however you want to define it, as a nation with freedom of religion, not a nation without religion?  Separation of church and state does not mean separation of a belief in God and state.  That's why God is referenced in our Constitution and on our buildings.....it's not a simple black and white issue in reality.  Of course, this was also a country of majority, although it is becoming more and more a country of minority with minority rights encroaching on majority rights....and, I don't know (as you don't) but it seems to me that the drive that has led to this situation could definitely be defined as the most Christian of motivations.  I'm no scholar of the religion or politics....just my sense of the situation.  If we are going to be completely secular, then maybe we should  stop all this compassion, forgiveness, and charity stuff and get back to a country of majority.

What is perhaps more to the point is trying to encourage a respectful and level- headed debate on the ethical issues.

You could say...
THE SECULAR WORLD SHOULD NOT ORDER RELIGIOUS AUTHORITIES WHAT OPINIONS THEY CHOOSE TO PROMOTE OR NOT TO PROMOTE.

Couldn't you?
