The general level of education is probably the most important aspect but there are other elements to the proliferation of mythologies. Re-affirmation and a widespread acceptance fostered by social conditioning, even without credible evidence, play important roles as well.
The creationist phenomena is a perfect example of a mindset fostered entirely by consensus and popularity. The popularity of this belief has a number of causal factors but paramount in its establishment as a mindset is the attainment of a critical mass. In other words; once a segment of the populace that is promoting a certain belief becomes large enough, the belief will gain its own momentum.

Thank You - I simply looked for cases that were credible while attempting to not let my bias cloud my judgement. Credible cases are extemely hard to find.
