Somewhere in my blogs you will find the numbers -- wasn't long ago I posted

Re: Re: The overwhelming majority of Christians are not like that radical element

Actually, my numbers might be off, which only further indicates the disturbing trend rippling through American politics these days.

The first article I found states that Evangelicals constitute roughly "a quarter to a third of the adult population".  There's no way of knowing just how many of those actively seek out legislation affecting separation of church and state, and other socio-religious matters.

Another source (About.com) suggests through a source of their own that strict Evangelicals constitute 8% of the population.  So if we average the two numbers together, I suppose we could come up with a very rough estimate at around 16.5%.

The same source linked above suggests that Atheists account for 8% of the population, and Atheists and Agnostics together, 12%.  An average figure could be arrive at 10%, but again, that's very rough.

What the numbers indicate to me is that either:

a. Atheists have a hard time admitting they're Atheists, falling more into the agnostic category but perhaps not having left faith behind entirely.
b. The Evangelical movement is growing faster than that of Atheists and Agnostics, thus by virtue of sheer numbers hold more power over the government.

Probably it's a combination of both, and the margin of error must always be accounted for, but given all the facts it's pretty hard to ignore the growing issue.

What's interesting is that a small group of fanatical believers can hold so much sway over our government institutions, all the while insisting that a mostly innocuous non-believing group of comparible size is somehow oppressing them.

The overwhelming majority of Christians are not like that radical element

that wants Christian ethos as the law of the land:\

10 Commandments in courthouse rotunda, prayer in schools, intelligent design/creationism taught as a science in schools, outlawing the teaching of evolution in schools, public religious displays.

It's only a small, vocal group of fanatical religionists that insists on installing a Christo-fascist controlling regime.
