It is known as ''ersatz.."
When I was studying for my Masters in Teaching in 1998, I came across a whole brilliant section• about how testing is a device for manipulation.
Many tests, especially those impossibly hard Math tests like in the GRE etc. are not there to really test your Math, but to test your mettle.
In other words it is like a sort of initiation. Students are given stuff to learn nothing to do with their subjects and completely useless.
Now if they 'bite the bullet' and pay the King his shilling by shutting up and cramming the useless stuff into their heads to regurgitate next day to get to get their erstatz 'A', they have, in the eyes of the powers that be, shown they have guts, are obedient, are not a threat to the system and know how to play the game.
That is what gets you in.
The actual content (not always but often) is bull crap.

The Fifth Language
So, NON ILLIGETIMI CABORUNDUM. (Latin for Don't let the bastards get you down.)

I am confused as it was an assessment test as opposed to proficiency! HMM, maybe that is not the place for you! sam

I would hate flunking a test, especially when I had passed it or worked at a place before. That happened with my learner's permit way back when. No fun.

Is it possible they already had someone in mind? And would not have given you a chance anyway? It's just happened to a very good friend of mine: she studied hard, did her best and then learned that the position was "reserved" for someone else.
