It seems that all of my photos are simply by luck. I don't even mess with the icons because I'm not really sure what they are for. Isn't that pitiful. But I have fun clicking away.

I agree, the SLR is the way to go! I still have my old Pentax, with several good lenses, but haven't used it in years - I really can no longer deal with all that business of having the films developed and not really knowing how things turn out until then...But lately I've been too busy to think much about photography at all...

Another vote for the SLR...
I have used SLRs since 1965. The big advantage is the ability to interchange lenses and use optional flash units. In the digital world, nothing beats the response time of the SLR and all the built in modes make it easy to get great results and if you blow a frame or two, just delete them!
