Robber Barons?
Okay, granted, there are many things that are not going right. However, can you name a time that did not consist of robber barons taking advantage of the rest of the populace? In the long lost past we had actual warfare, death and destruction to subjugate the masses and in the current era we do it through our business system. Are you under the mistaken impression that there ever was or is ever going to be some type of fairness utopia on this planet?
Not bloody likely. Of course, like most people I'd like to see things work better, but also like most people I am powerless to invent or enact some better system. Rest assured that when oil gets expensive enough and stays that way, we will turn to alternative resources which are hopefully renewable. Anyway, for trees, at least they can be regrown over a generation or two if we don't competely sterilize the entire planet. Personally, I think there might be hope with some combination of solar cells and fuel cells. When? Once the cost is competitive with petroleum based energy sources.
As mentioned in another post, the true or total cost of our actions or consumption is difficult to measure, since we don't really cost in things like environmental damage. So, yeah, it will happen much later then anyone with a clear conscience would probably like. That is my guess anyway.
