It is also a natural progression from simpler blogging formats such as Blogit. I cannot take any kind of credit for it however. Where I have become familiar with the software and have written a few templates (themes) for Wordpress, others have done all of the hard parts.
It is the plugins that are the key; if you need a feature, chances are that someone has written a plugin for it. It then becomes a matter of uploading the plugin and activating it in the control panel. Traditional web applications can take hours or days to write, a plugin takes a few minutes to install.
