prestige equals power (unless money is involved)
In an agricultural society, more prestige is given to those providing the most food for the 'tribe', the most comfort. SchoolDaysTribes weren't weeding out the weak, as in evolution, they were mimicking the values of the current society - good looks and nice clothes.
