There are usually some very good reasons for exiting from a relationship; be it marriage or friendship. Irrespective of whether we stay put out of pity or go to cushion ourselves it will change that person's life. Good post; thank you for expressing the 'problem' so concisely.

True...but doesn't it also matter on how the other party handles it too? No matter how gentle and sweetly you exit a person's life, if the other person won't accept it, will it still not end badly in some fashion?
