I couldn't agree more with your thoughts about writing from the heart. I actually made a similar observation in my post on Saturday.
When I wrote my last album I was pretty miserable. In fact I was suffering from depression. As a result the songs were all dark in tone and the album ended up being called "How to lose Friends and Alienate People". Not really a party album then! The things was that I tried to write happy songs but they just sounded so false that I couldn't get on with them so, like you said, I had to write what my heart was feeling which was misery.
Not a particularly happy story on my part (although I'm happier now) but I just thought you'd appreciate this real life testimonial of your thoughts.
