Hi. I keep several notebooks for various writing projects and one literally next to me at night with a pen and a light in case I get an idea or hear a phrase which always happens when I am most tired. I also read several books at a time - I mean parts of each. When I tire of one but still want to read, I go to a different subject or author or switch from fiction to non-fiction. I'm sure every author/writer has their own way. Kathy

Very rarely do writers work on one work at a time. At least that is what I read once. As a result I imagine many others do the same as you.
