Your title No good deed goes unpunished reminds me of a well known English stage and TV actress who some years ago published a book of memoirs with the title No turn unstoned. The book sold well, to a large extent, I think, on the strength of the title. Keep your title. I think it is a very good title for a book and it may come in handy one day. - Anonim,

never say die... not that you ever would!  Think of it as buying points in karma .. your turn must surely come and anyway you are a good writer so what do they know? Maybe you are too good to need a mentor.

I'll do it anyway
Great conclusion. If you're doing it cause you love doing it, nothing can stop you, and that fact will come through in your work.

Get out o' the box!

1. So people you give advice to do well? Become a mentor!!

2. Maybe the people who go to the training and schools do less well than their cohorts because they recognize they have deficits and keep seeking remedies. Maybe they need to step off the dock and swim.

3. Maybe people who write well successfully without extra tutelage simply do so because they CAN.

I know too exactly how you feel.
Went to sell where some friends sold thousands of dollars the previous day and sold only  $90. So many compliments and so much encouragement and so little money. Living on a dime and a prayer, many prayers.

We shall overcome................

Don't beat yourself up for feeling a wee bit low inside because your friend
was accepted. I would feel like making a voodoo doll. I hate rejection so much but when I do get something accepted, I can find a self defacing reason why that happened. Like not enough entires or I knew someone who knew someone etc. You really are a great writer and very brave the way you keep going. I think we all struggle here and it is knowing each other that keeps us writing. that and the need to write. Luv you.

Stick with it. Remember that most writers were rejected several times before they were picked up. Stephen King is a very good example. Can you imagine someone turning down "The Shining?" It was turned down many times and I am sure once it was finally published, those that turned it down wish that they had not!!

Did you ever hear the story about JK Rowling and how her mss nearly

got returned unread? It seems the receptionist or assistant editor or whatever who's stuck with opening items in the slush pile picked up the Harry Potter mss and as she was slipping it into the SASE her eye caught a sentence on the front page, so she pulled it back out of the envelope and read a little more. Then she took it to the editor and made the pitch for her to read it, and you know how this story ends.

So what happens to your work, which we know is well written and interesting and every bit as marketable as anything else on the shelves at Borders, depends on the assistant reader's mood and personal preference. Sooner or later the planets will be in proper alignment, your target will have enjoyed the perfect cup of coffee on her way to work and your mss will strike her as just the thing her company is looking for.  Or, to put it another way, never give up!
