My father sticks a pin in his nail to relieve the pressure. I'm not sure if that's good to do or not.

I can sympathize with your poor little one with the injured toe.  Definitely she needs pressure relief.  But, why make her suffer through the night?  You could have done it yourself so easily.   Once when I was in agony after mashing my big toe I asked my 16 year old son to do it as he was the only one available.  One touch with the red hot needle and the blood spurted three feet into the air.  That's how much pressure can build.  Ah!!! immediate relief.  You don't have to poke a hole.  The red hot needle burns through the toenail immediately and the pool of blood behind the toenail keeps the heat from burning anything that can feel it.
