Comments on Prejudice as a religious institution

womeninthegap - I don't take that phrase the same way

Anxiety could also be used as a synonym for "worry" but you do make a point, a couple of points actually.....Religion is routinely sold to its constituents on its intangible values. Many of these perceived values are articulated in a manner that denigrates others who do not believe in whatever specific religion is being sold. Subsequently, the act of disparaging others quite often becomes inherent in the common language of the religion's constituents. The notion of being superior to others, especially those who do not believe in God, is the byproduct of a salespitch that usurps the high road by nothing more than proclamation.

We see this phenomena manifest itself right here on Blogit time and time again.  Some chucklehead, that I would not trust to carry my briefcase, comes out of the woodwork to demonstrate that the only part of their own religious message they understood is that despite being a hate filled blubbering social shipwreck, they somehow are superior to those who do not believe in God.

Not sure how my comment quite fits into the bigotry...
idea, but I was incensed when I drove by one of our local fundie churches this morning and saw this message:

"Anxiety is unbelief disguised." So, in other words, anyone out there with an anxiety (or mental health)disorder is only that way because of being a non believer? And, would be instantly fixed if they believed? Perhaps anxiety proliferates in a society that has such a long list of bullshit dos and don'ts that people feel like they need to be like chicken little all the time, waiting for the sky to fall in...especially since the rules shift from group to group and are often contradictory.

Or, maybe the anxiety just comes from having to listen to a bunch of loud-mouth, racist, elitist, holier-than-thou morons.
