It is the beginning of Lent, a Christian season of prayer, repentance and fasting.  The Ash Wednesday service includes the words "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" from the Book of Common Prayer and a reference to Genesis and Ecclesiastes, calling to mind our physical mortality and impermanence in the human world.  In this world, we are ultimately all losers and nobodies.  We are only remembered in the Book of Life.
