This is nice, especially the compassion for an old man. I sometimes wonder at what can happen in people's lives to cause such pain.

Yes, sometimes we fail to be grateful for our blessings. To fall from the mountainside and not being able to get up must be traumatic. Here, you express these sentiments well.
