I know people who direct their lives based on their 'great faith', self-defined, and who invariably meet with failure. I've known some who lost relatives to disease because of their faith in healing powers. My own efforts at belief met only with silence.

What is your experience with people of "great faith?" I am not asking you sarcasticly. Did some church people burn you? Did you try to believe at one point and were met with great disappointment?

I agree that hope is necessary to productive life, and that faith of a sort, at a minimum faith that there is a future, is normal, perhaps 'hard-wired' for humanity. Morals, as you recognize, are a selected property (okay, so I use a different term to describe it and its origin, but in practical terms it comes out the same.) But my experience with people of great faith is not promising. My description would be problematic, and at times dangerous. But then I think God was created in our image.
