This is my imagined completion of the last words written by Stephen Collins Foster on a scrap of paper found in his pocket after his death:

Dear friends and gentle hearts

Likely, he did not have enough paper to finish the lyrics, but I am thinking that it was a sad poem for the sad days before his death.
