There is precedent for something like what you suggest. Some people decided to live on the average food stamp allowance -- a dollar a day for food -- for awhile to see what it's like for poor people in America.
Let Congress work for minimum wage. Not really, of course. Then for a poor working person to serve in Congress would go from nearly impossible to impossible. They need to be paid well so that a regular person could afford to serve if elected. But I don't think they need anything like what they get.
It's irritating when people who receive government-sponsored health insurance (from lawmakers to teachers) oppose government health insurance for others on grounds that it would cost too much. Hello?!
