Raising the gas tax is an excellent idea. It would help decrease dependence on foreign oil and lower the federal deficit in a way that most people would hardly notice if it were done gradually. Yes, it would add some burden to consumers, but as that burden is likely to increase as consumption increases, and those increases would help our enemies more than us, it will be better for the country as a whole to preempt the market in this case, and take the benefit.
