- Go to Criminal claims he is just an addict
yes?
Stealing is very typical behavior for addicts...especially stealing the drugs to which they are addicted. No surprise there. An addict in my family repeatedly stole large amounts of money from me and also stole a bottle of the pain meds I was given for a surgical recovery presumably so he could sell it on the street for his preferred drug. Stealing and lying is a symptom of the disease of addiction.
Drug addiction is physiological, not just psychological. Opiate addiction in particular requires medical detox. Yes, the addict needs to show personal responsibility and initiative to overcome the addiction. But it's not just like changing the channel on the television. He needs medical assistance to improve his chances of actually kicking an opiate habit.
I wouldn't say I'm inclined to be sympathetic to his problem, having been burned by an addict before and not being an addict myself...but, on the other hand, simply getting outraged at standard addict behavior doesn't help him solve the problem. He needs to go to rehab again, that's all. The nursing home needs to have better security measures with their employees and their painkillers.
