The Who were a very frustrating band. Some of their stuff - including I CAN'T EXPLAIN - was brilliant, and some of it was complete crap. I think there first album, THE WHO SINGS MY GENERATION, is one of the best albums of the British Invasion, and one of my favorite albums of all time. But they recorded very few consistently good albums after that, as Pete Townshend's songwriting became more ambitious but, regrettably, more pretentious. I realize that I'm in the minority here, but I just can't stand TOMMY and A QUICK ONE WHILE HE'S AWAY. This stuff obviously had an impact at the time, and even helped in the development of pop music as an art form, but I just don't think it dates well. But I will always love the Who for that first album and WHO' NEXT, as well as I CAN SEE FOR MILES, THE REAL ME, and many other songs spread out over several weak albums. As far as I'm concerned, they're the kind of band that iTunes was invented for.
