Re: Pat_B -- the door opening for one doesn't close it on another...
I couldn't have said it better. It's absolutely true!

There are only two roads one can take. There's the low road of Jeremiah Wright, Al Sharpton, and that ilk, the angry, bitter, fist-waving and finger-pointing, the "look what they've done to us" bluster of perpetual victimhood. Then there's the high road of self-reliance and self-improvement, of working hard, and following the rules, of self-respect and respect for others (when possible).

The dream of peace and opportunity indeed belongs to each of us, but still we must learn a door opening for one person doesn't necessarily mean a door slamming in the face of another. If we can ever reach that point, we, as a country, have made it.

This brief recounting of history, and your conclusion is heartening. I commented today that I see racism on a daily basis in my job, but on reflection, I will admit that much of what I see is really anti-immigrant sentiment, and race is only one factor. But still, progress has been made, even since I was a child. Thanks for the reminder.

True, this!
We all grow up to learn some people are more equal than others, that we're handicapped by our genetics or by what our parents taught us. I believe the dream of peace and opportunity belongs to every one of us. For the first time I'm seeing a real possibility we can all live it together. It's enough to make me weep with joy just thinking about it.
