The cost of living is pretty good in Kansas City, MO.  I think I stay right here  and just travel a bit to those other places.

Shelly,
I don't think that $13 is enough to relocate to New York.
Having said that... I am SURE there have to be other jobs you could get there making much more than that though...so don't limit yourself.

I was making $7.50 being an associate manager (starting wage with no raises) for 15 years of experience, just a few short years ago.  Now they hire general labor here flipping burgers for up to $9 per hour.

If you want to be in New York, I know you can do it. Just look for something that pays more, and find out some areas that you could commute from where the cost of living is lower.

Life is too short not to live your dream.

Depends on living costs, which you've probably already heard..
It may not be worth it, but that was a strange call!..:) Best of luck, Shelly.

Shelby b
Others have already told you but all things being relative here you can pretty much expect to have a much higher cost of living anywhere than where you are. What is wrong with looking for a job in a larger city in Ohio?

Miss Shelly,
I was pretty much gonna offer the same comments as I read before me. Cost of living is outrageous in NY. First, I'd be happy you at least got a call! My husband is working a crappy job right now and has sent out TONS of resumes. He has a lot of business exp. and a Six Sigma degree and he is lucky to get one call every couple months; let alone a response from even half the places he applies. Very frustrating. But, I think this lady called you because maybe she thought you possibly were already planning on moving there or something. I'd skip that one and keep looking. Just my 2 cents!

Cost of living is WAY higher in NYC, that's why they pay more.

I took a job in PHX a decadeor two or so ago and the wage was higher, but the costs of living there were so much higher that I actually became much poorer there and suffered, actually.

That's all she said? It wouldn't be worth relocating, without giving any reason why she'd think that? ANd like Kabu says..I'm sure your job is out there somewhere...and you'll find it!

I agree with what metalrat said.

Definitely...
...but, take into consideration the increased cost of living in a place like New York, which could offset the increase in pay.

I guess I've been pretty lucky spending my working life in Australia

Minimum wages are way higher there but don't relocate to Sydney love cos housing is way higher too.

I really don't know why that woman rang you though if she only wanted to insult you. But that job is out there somewhere. I just know it is.

Shelly, weird that she even called...but the thing is, like someone else
said, housing in that part of the country is extremely expensive, so $13 an hour wouldn't get you a safe place to live there, maybe??

Just asking, don't take it personally, but, I thought there was a minimum wage in USA? In Québec province it is now around $8.75 per hour minimum, i.e. with no experience what so ever. So, your wages sound pretty low for someone with 20 years of experience. No?!

Depends on where in NY.  Upstate, cost of living is lower.  Around NYC, one-bedroom apartments run at least $1,500 for decent neighborhoods.  Mal

lustor, if you don't mind me asking...what part of Cali are you in?
I want to see what they are paying.

If I am not wrong I think NY gets paid like Ca and like you said they werent paying any attention to where you are, some person sitting there making call backs making minimum wage.

Seems silly shelly...
...that's up to you to decide whether it's worth a move.  It's good you got a call so quickly though!
