Talion_ - my social circle is much the same

Religious discussions rarely, if ever, come up. Blogit on the other hand has provided both a conduit for expressing religious opinions and a chance to see just how screwed up some people are in terms of what they believe. Where I was not really surprised at what people are capable of believing despite their modern era educations, the blatant hypocrisy with which some of them condemn others is still to this day rather shocking. I view clubbing the more insufferable of their numbers over the head as a public service. It may well be a complete waste of time but it is also entertaining as hell watching the righteous become decidedly unGodly at receiving a little bit of resistance to their message.

Ultimately it is about "rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness" and if the reminders are not ever persistent, some members of the God squad would usurp those rights in a heartbeat in favor of imposing their delusions on the rest of us.

Outside of classroom situations when I was in college, religious-themed discussions have been few and far between. There's the occasional slack-jawed response when an acquaintance discovers I'm an agnostic, or a wide-eyed, stuttering reply after I politely refuse their offer to save my soul, but otherwise, the God subject rarely comes up in my social circles. Until joining this site, I honestly had no idea what some Christians think of those who don't believe as they do. I honestly had no idea that for some, the fact that atheists and agnostics exist is an affront to their beliefs, an assault on all they hold dear. Needless to say, it blew my mind. Though surprising, their viewpoints mean little, if anything, to me. I don't particularly like it, but simultaneously, I don't have the urge to defend my point of view. Those who brazenly proclaim atheism and every other version of non-belief is some great moral failing can't be reasoned with and alas, they are immune to clubbing as well. Doing either is ultimately a monumental waste of time and energy. I can no more defend my beliefs to them as I could defend my race to a Klansman. Anything I say or do would be twisted to prove they are correct. As long as my rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness aren't threatened, I couldn't care less what they think. Let them persist in their fantasy world. Evidently for them, it's much better than the real one.
