Up until someone got the idea to build an industry on the notion of mankind being contemporary with dinosaurs, scholars always believed that this passage and the other vague references to large beasts found in the bible were speaking of elephants, hippos and as you mention rhinocerous. The part I find rather amazing is how this idea is actually growing in its number of proponents in the face of irrefutable evidence to the contrary.
