Pat_B, I hope ex-hubby out-lasts me.  Somewhere along the way, years ago (and I'm sure he'll never forget it), I told him, "Even though we are divorced, I care about you and if you ever need it, I'll be there to help you out."  Your post has reminded me of this and I wish I'd never said it.  But, you know how things go.

I can't help but pass on a message to you that I got from Dr. Margaret when I was constantly worrying about my oldest son, and he was playing the games your Fred plays.

The drugs did it you see, but that didn't stop me from trying to be God for him.

"John" she said, "I hate to tell you this, you aren't God, now turn your son over to Him and never take the job back, It's not your job. Now that's called faith."

So I listened and life went on and my son is a big shot in Florida now and hasn't spoken to me in 15 years anyway, and God did His job and I did mine. And I am grateful.

My youngest son kept 22 years away from me, and a few months ago he came from California and said this to me; "Dad, the greatest thing you ever told me is that I wasn't your son, I was God's and that has saved my life."

Fred is God's to handle.†

It's always nice to hear about June! And you're probably right in removing yourself from a stage where your role is neither well defined nor welcome...And good luck with the story...
