Eager Allen Poe come to mind a short story, deep into the well you went.
A man on gallow, another pulls lever. Shot ring out pop rope. Man fall in river untie swim to bank. Runs dogs bark he hear in the wind, goes through woods come to his house. See his wife and daughter he reach out to embrace them, the rope broke his neck!!

Wow... so I got a little lost, but when i got to the "agonist" I was reading it as The Antagonist and thinking about The Antigony--which I can't remember but was written by Sophocles or Empedocles about what else, but the Agenemnon family (and when you got something like this, who needs the Sapranos?). As iv'e been reading you lately. don't know why I'd be picking up on these naunces--unless they were there.
