I love these kinds of posts.  This one is especially poignant for me as my mother and her people were all Czechs and my Grandma and Grandpa Jelinek first met each other in Wenceslas Square in Praha (Prague).   Mom often sang us the song and told us the tale that you have just told in this post.

Charles- That's exactly what my husband says nearly every day - 'Freedom' vs. 'fairness' in trade. Thanks for the book title; a perfect gift for him! Thanks, friend!

I'm afraid that may be the case, Cee. Unless the powers that be shift their focus from economic "freedom" to economic "fairness."...i.e. justice.
For a sobering, yet hopeful read on the current international economic order, check out David C. Korten's When Corporations Rule the World....very eye opening.

A very eloquent and learned observation, Charles. Thank you for your thoughts.  Aren't we headed to a modern, middle-classed feudalism?

"Saint" Wenceslas works just fine, Cee...
...after all, "Santa" means "Saint," not to mention "Saint Nicolas."
Speaking of CEO's, thirty years ago, the average CEO earned around 40 times what the average worker made, now, like you said, it's up to a whopping 450!!
Hmm...I guess that's what all the NeoCons who ushered in the new age of Robber Baronism, ala Reagan, Bush(wacker), Bush(wacker) and Co. meant when they embraced the ever so egalitarian "trickle-down" economics.

Re: Interesting. I never knew the story behind the song
Thanks for the read, Shelly.  I've learned yet again, history repeats itself, over and over.
