The camera was a Canon EOS Rebel XT. I was using program with the ISO set at 1600 in the program mode.

I like the second better.
It is just a bit clearer, and doesn't have the lights below to distract the eye. Also, I really notice the smoke!
I see your point about the mystic quality of being unfocussed. I'm wondering what kind of camera you used, and if it made its own decisions on the lighting and all, or how much choice you could impose.
