mordent - I agree that long standing traditions and institutions afford a

form of social influence to Christianity but I don't think it stops at Christmas.

Easter for example is another universal holiday based on the Christian religion. We are witnessing a change to these traditions, propagated by evolving social perspectives and shifting demographics. As this change occurs some upheaval is inevitable. The influence of just one religion over an eclectic social demographic is no longer acceptable or even practical. Unfortunately, those who have always included others in their religious traditions without thought or consideration object to this change, despite it being the only way to protect their own rights to religious freedom.

I don't want religion running the government so I'm glad for the seperation of church and state.

The power of Christianity lies in the atmosphere. What I mean is it's Christmas carols we hear in the streets, Santa that we see and of course the giving of presents that we associate with Christmas. It's Christmas day that shuts down the West.

No other religion has this much power over the US or any Western nation. So that is where Christians get the impression that it's a Christian nation so to speak. Obviously I'm lumping Catholics, Lutherans etc. all under Christianity.

Re: I've made that point myself -- begin respecting religion
Xeno-x - I can only imagine what a country would turn into if the fundies ever had their way. Theocracy is the furthest thing from democracy. For some reason the unification of church and state proponents seem to have this myopic view that not only would their specific religion prevail, and this despite current demographics, but that they themselves would fare well under such a system. What is it going to take before these people get the message?

I've made that point myself -- begin respecting religion
and we can end up with One State Religion that excludes all others.  They don't seem to see it that way.

And, as you noted in the Atheist sign issue in Washington State, if you decide to  respect one religion, you have to respect them all, and that could end up being quite a mess, considering all the religions practiced in the U.S.A. due to its Freedom of Religion.
