The same principle is used at auctions.  The auctioneer hikes the price up by perhaps $5 and then in $2 lots and even $1 increases - you tend to think, 'What's another dollar between friends?'

Snipers

They wait to the last day then run up the price. Someone often goes for it, sorta like slowly raising the bait instead of cranking it up fast.

For instance...who would have thought eighty bucks for a glass Pyrex coffee percolater circa 1970? Yet they start cheaper and consistently wind up there.

The proof will be if those high prices continue despite waning sales. You can tell the shills in a game because they rarely quit no matter what.

Aw shucks Pat, you've got me blushing.   Minnesota will have to wait until another lifetime, although I did win a match last week.  Thanks for the compliment about my writing - you make it sound quite impressive.   I'm forcing myself out from behind a self made barrier of thorny 'who cares' and 'what's the points.'

Ell is right, up to a point.

If your convoluted mind had a criminal bent, then you might have skimmed a good living off unsuspecting dupes. As it is, you've created a style of fiction that is both funny and factual, that teaches us in spite of our best attempts to avoid real thinking.

I've missed you and was beginning to think you were in Minnesota training for the billiard finals. (Minnesota Fats, famous pool champ/hustler)  Write on!

Thank you sam444.  It has been a while since I posted; I didn't realize anybody would miss the Dunesifter posts!  As I mentioned in my reply to Azur, I'm sure these things happen.

Azur
Ooops!  The editorial note has been deleted and spelling corrected, but it is still too long.  I'm glad you enjoyed it Azur.  I am trying to return from a fallow period and I found myself grimacing as I posted it.  Practice, practice.  I believe it could and does happen with some more expensive items.

I have missed reading you! I love  the way you research and check all the details. I like your idea to establish a base. Genius I say and out the door with convoluted! sam

It makes sense to me.
It's perhaps unlikely in this case, but I think you are onto something that does happen very often. I think in this case the person who paid the inflated rate online had not done their homework. Is your brain too convoluted? Is this comment too convoluted? Doesn't matter. I enjoyed the post right down to the editor's note.
