Maybe its time to spread your wings....
I said that to say this, sometimes events such as this is similar to a mother bird pulling the down out of the nest when it is time for the little ones to earn their wings. I appreciate your ability to discern the real versus the ritual. You sound like you are exercising your wings in a rightful way that will cause your spiritual being to soar. I'm not Dr. Phil, but I trust that you will follow your heart and not traditions. Blessings! Jim
