gomedome, I don't think that would work
So far what we keep seeing is that hey do not react that way to fear.  You nuke one group of them, another will only get worse and attack more.  That is what happened with Iraq.  We go in and bully our way around and show we can take a country without really trying.  Instead of them backing down, that got them all to attack harder. We showed that would could kick their asses at it mad them madder and more determined to show they do not fear us.  If we get more extreme in our tactics, they will just follow the example and feel more justified with their actions.

Look at how we reacted to 9/11.  We got hit and hit hard in a manner that made it clear if these people really want to get us they can.  We didn't back down.  Instead Bush used that as justification to go beyond just attacking those who attacked us first. A enemy like these terroreist groups want us to over react in those ways, since that very much helps their recruiting and gives them the justifcation they need in the eyes of their people.  You nuke um, then you basically are setting them up for some easy recruiting that will only help to make the problems worse. So far that is what history has shown us with these groups.

kooka_lives - what cantey_1975 is saying has a great deal of merit

But the reality is that it runs headlong into your argument. Do we want to become inhuman? No we do not but when we make this decision, we are also accepting that we must always live with the threat of terrorism, there is simply no ground in between. And spare us the argument that they only have attacked on US soil twice in the last two decades, we simply do not know how many times their plans have been thwarted.

We must acknowledge that we will never fully defeat the terrorists but how to reduce terrorism dramatically is simple, we must become bigger, meaner and more ruthless bastards than they are as a means of mobilizing an otherwise ambivalent and even supportive muslim general populace against them. If I were in charge of things, I would warn them, then nuke Medina, turn the second holiest muslim site to a sheet of glass with the threat of Mecca being next. In return for my not nuking Mecca, I would demand the heads of Bin Laden and his cronies mounted on poles in the center square. Let these primitive religious fools understand that to mess with us is to unleash their worst nightmares.

To fight them with conventional warfare while attempting to adhere to our values is exactly the weaknesses that the terrorists are exploiting.

cantey, you want us to become inhuman then?
Seriously what you are suggesting here is racially for us to sink to a lower level than them and show them we have no respect at all for life.  Besides the fact that such a harsh set of tactics would degrade us, turn our military into judge, jury and executioners on the spot (Which in itself is just asking for trouble and is taking us one step closer to being a police state) the simple fact is such a tactic would NOT work.

Most of these terrorists are ready to die for their beliefs, so to use death as a way to deter them just doesn't seem to make much sense.  What would end up happening is that we would piss them off all the more because what you suggest would basically allow all manner of needless killing to take place and there would be innocent people being killed (Since we already know for a fact that we have been imprisoning innocent people as terrorists) as terrorists and that would only empower the terrorist movement, creating more who are willing to die to destroy us and our evil ways (Which we would be openly showing to them all of we did that).

Bombing Japan is NOT something to be proud of by the way.  While it may have taken them out of the war, it was a very dark event that should be viewed something that should never have come about.

Re: cantey
How about when a confirmed terrorist is captured, he is immedialy put to death. All soldiers and marines wouuld act on this directive. When they are captured they will die in excruciating pain for all to see.

Im just saying weve got to start fighting fire with an incinerator. Over whealm them with such fear and dread that they dare not even fart in the general direction of the U.S.  The same way the Japs got real meek after the U.S. with them along the lines I am implying here

Wow, that really is some ignorant BS.  I am Christian, but someone needs to introduce the line "God helps those who help themselves" to that town.  I hope Obama repeals the Patriot Act.

cantey
The only way to really stop terrorists would be a police state.  And even then the terrorists will still get through, although just the formation of a police state would be showing the terrorists that they are winning.

Racial profiling does not work and is insulting, because the Muslim and Arabs are NOT the biggest dangers to us.  if we wanted to make this country safer, we need to start racial profiling white Christians, since they are much more likely to hurt you or your loved ones that a Muslim any day of the week.  Yet if we started doing that there would be no end to the calls of how wrong doing such is.  Seriously, the people you go to church with are statistically more likely to be a danger to the people of this country than those of Middle Eastern descent.

And I will not stop going off about how the liberties of the people of this country are under attack.  Just because it does not have a direct affect on our lives here and now, does not mean it is not harmful to us.  The more those like you ignore the reality of it and pretend there is nothing wrong going on, the more likely it is that MORE liberties will get taken away.  And sooner or later it will affect you directly and then it will be too late, you will be even more powerless to than you are allowing yourself to be now.  That is an undeniable lesson of history.  Whenever we see anyone's liberties being taken way, it is the duty of those who stand for freedom to do all they can to protest it and get a stop put to it, even if your own freedoms and liberties are not effected.  But for someone to understand this truth, they would first have to have a true respect for freedom.

who said anything about a police state?
How do you go off on these tangents? I'm talking about using common sense and employing it to survive. What is so offensive about racial profiling? In these times, to me it is just common sense, in the case of detecting terrorists whom have almost 100% been of Middle Eastern decent.

And you really have to stop with the "we have lost our liberties" riff. The average, law abiding Joe like you and me going about their daily lives are not discernibly or practicably impacted by the Patriot Act at all.

kooka_lives - this type of thing cracks me up
Just like a moth careening mindlessly towards a light source without any knowledge or concern as to what happens when they get there, these people are brainwashed to a point that they must insert their version of God whenever and wherever they can. The idea doesn't even make any sense. If there was a conscious being capable of protecting people from the religious fanaticism of other people, wouldn't this being be smart enough to nip the problem in the bud?

cantey, you are right
We can become a police state where we have no rights or freedoms and everything we do is monitored by Big Brother, even just leaving your house for a walk around the block.  Then and only would we be safer (Not completely safe though.)

Outside of that, it is really is just not going to happen.  Racial profiling, which is insulting degrading and goes against everything this country is suppose to be about, is not going to do it.  Especially since it really doesn't work.

The (Un)Patriotic act took away our liberties but did nothing to make us safer.

Of course considering how often we are attacked by foreign terrorists herein American soil, there is little to actually worry about from them.  You are much more likely to be killed in a mindlessly violent attack from an average looking white Christian, just like the one's who live next door to you, than from a foreign terrorist.

I don't agree that there is nothing we can do
to ultimately prevent terrorist attacks. There are measures that can be taken, but political correctness deballs them all.
