Taps this is so me so I try not to entertain although Wiley is the best
We work so well together and he does way more preparation than I do. I can't cook more than one thing at a time or I ruin them both and my galsses fall off my nose and drop into the food. Aging sure ain't for the fainhearted.

I have noticed I have great intentions but it does take longer to get them done too! Getting old is taking its toll. I have folks coming over tomorrow for the game and I suspect it will be a long day for me too! I will probably fall into bed as you did! sam

Naut...for a minute there I thought you were going to have one of her son's cut the veggies so Taps could rest... loll instead you have her doing steps loll Its funny but it might actually work when I think about it . Personally I think Taps should get a comfy chair and put it in the kitchen and from there direct all three sons and their mates so that they can cook the dinner for her. Taps is too precious to us and they are tiring her out! No fair.!!!

OH TAPS
I do know so well what you are talking about. I love having family and friends over. I could put a marvelous spread with all the fussy fixings in a snap once upon a time. Not anymore. It doesn't feel the same during or after either. I am sorry you are reaching that place. Life is still lots of fun but buy the turkey and dressing at a good market. Enjoy yourself.

I've never heard of such a thing, Nautikos, but I certainly will try it. Son #3 can make or get me anything.

Oh yes, hazel_st_cricket, I forgot that part. I always burn myself at least once, usually on some part of the hot oven.

I've never even heard of pumpkin bread, let alone eaten any...And there sure is a lot going on when you're cooking, lol!
But let me give you some advice on how to deal with problem #2: Have one of your sons make you a block of wood, about a 10" long, 8" wide and 4" or even 6" high; place that on the floor where you stand for a while, and put one foot on it, alternating feet every now and then, and your back will thank you...

Sounds good to me! LOL
that reminds me...One thanksgiving I decided to cook the turkey for just me and mom. I put the turkey in the oven and we left for church. We came back to a house full of smoke! Mom never let me cook the turkey again! LOL

I did notice... Taps, I missed your warm comments and then I went looking for your slice of wisdom and re-read one I had taken to heart already. You do what you do because you are you... and your family is super lucky to have you. I am also dreading Thank Giving, dreading it and at the same time I can't wait for it... to see all my siblings , and their kids and grandkids...not to mention my kids and grandkids :-) Its going to be lots of work and I will be also stiff and wanting to cover my head with the warm covers but hey...it will be well worth it. you take it easy now and take care of you :-) xoxo

Re: With the super-extended family--celebrating together, though living apart--
It surely does help, Ciel. It's funny how the ones who bring dishes are alway doing it and the ones who don't, never do. Does that make sense? LOL

With the super-extended family--celebrating together, though living apart--
it helps if the person whose house takes on the crowd cooks the turkey (or tofurkey or turduckhen or whatever!) and the others bring side-dishes to re-heat, salad to toss, etc. A lot of side dishes travel well--as long as the couriers aren't too hungry!

Troosha, it's just hard for me to give up on something I've always done. But, I surely do enjoy it when Son #3 does the entertaining (mostly outside in summer). Son #2 & wife also entertain well, but it sure is a long way to FL, especially around the holidays.

Where's the recipe for the alfredo/broccoli casserole? And I can feel the warm pumpkin bread on my tongue. As for the rest of it......I don't know that it's even a matter of age as much as we all have too much going on these days. In earlier times, most of us could concentrate on the work, and pleasure, at hand in preparing a feast for our loved ones and friends.....now, there's just TOO MUCH going on everywhere, in our minds, in our environment....too many "to do" lists, etc. I find myself longing for those days when things were slower.....

#3 is one that I have to pay special attention to. I get so easily side-tracked that I can't leave the kitchen.
(I'm already dreading Christmas dinner which I've chosen to host). Isn't there an age when it's ok for us to retire from making those grand dinners? I'm only in my 6th decade and I find it a pain....
