Weak crotches are narrow crotches (say what?)

Silver maple branches tend to leave the trunk at an acute angle, and branches leaving the trunk (no pun intended) at a narow angle are weaker than those coming off at a ninety degree, like oaks.

We have dandies, called "valley oaks":

Sorry, just gotta brag. Come see them sometime, the snaking branches hold their own ecosystem, incuding a biting salamander.

All during Fall we suffer with black walnuts landing on the roof. We get
used to the noise after a while.... Pretty soon we'll lose the pretty maple leaves, though. Our new bartlett pear tree has gorgeous red leaves this fall!

Ah yes, the maples! I have two on my property, right by the fence, and for some reason most of their leaves are ending up on my neighbour's property. It's a good thing we get along well, and they love those trees...

The picture makes me think of a river of gold flowing through the forest.  ~Peace, OTA
