Re: It's funny (strange, not ha-ha) how the mindset of people transcends
True. But in the Senate, the rest of the world gets involved. After all, Senator Stevens has brought disgrace on the Senate, and will be expelled. Maybe he'll resign, now that the election is over. Either way, the whole country will see how Alaskans behave, and that may affect what the rest of us tell our representatives about federal spending there, so they are not quite so isolated as they may think. If voting for Stevens was a tactical move, I won't hold it against them, but if they really wanted him to continue to represent them, they've lost my respect.

Re: Perhaps Barack will be our first politician to truly toss out Machiavelli?
If Obama does toss out Machiavelli, I hope he doesn't toss him too far. There will always be those willing to use Machiavellian tactics to get what they want, and those not willing to retaliate with strength will lose. But a new consciousness, in terms of deeper discussion and a willingness to at least hear the opposition before acting, would be a good thing.

It's funny (strange, not ha-ha) how the mindset of people transcends
geography. Based on your reportage, folks in Alaska have some commonality with folks in Georgia -- they'll elect whoever they like and the rest of the country can mind its own business.

Perhaps Barack will be our first politician to truly toss out Machiavelli?
I certainly hope, as do millions of others who want to see the dawning of a new consciousness.
