I agree with a lot of your advice, in fact am following it, except the self publishing. I don't think it's a good idea, not if your are serious about your fiction because if you want to attract a "real" publisher a self published book is NOT a good point on your resume. But, you are particularly spot on with developing multiple skills to find writing assignments. At present I am very happy with the language & culture channel of brighthub and try to find better work for my travel articles.
