Solomon's Parable
My understanding of Solomon's famous parable suggests that from the beginning, he was a brutal opportunist.  His reputation for wisdom may have been earned, but he gained power by ruthlessness.

It works like this:  The two women were the rightful heir to David's throne, and Solomon, the usurper.  When faced with the threat of dividing the kingdom (the child) the usurper was quite willing to go ahead (threatening civil war to get what he wanted), while the rightful heir feared for the suffering of his people, and was willing to lose his rightful place to stop a war.  Or so Solomon was suggesting.  That's why the people "heard and trembled".  Solomon's threats were hardly idle, and he got what he wanted, but there was nothing righteous about him.  He was a Machiavellian tyrant who ruled by brute force.

The fear of the Lord that is wisdom and to DEPART from evil is understanding. This is so reassuring! Wonderful post too! sam
