Wow...
...Umberto Eco threw me back to my Art History classes in college. I loved studying the medieval cathedrals for their grandeur and the role they played in the communities in which they were built.
Great post and thanks for visiting my blog.
I'll be around as time allows.
Take care.

Troosha,
the book gives great insight into the history of the medieval Church and the mindset of fear that ruled it.  The movie is a good murder mystery with a Holmes-like intellectual detective in a world where it is very dangerous to be anything but superstitiously, unquestioningly Catholicly Christian.  The visual quality of the movie is incredibly rich and wonderful! I mean, even beyond Sean Connery and Christian Slater...

I confess I had never heard of either the book or the movie so had to look it up.  It sounds like quite a “meaty” read –the author himself being quite an intellect and philosopher.  With the exception of spiritual reading and exploration, when it comes to a novel I tend to pick up something much lighter but it sounds most intriguing.

Ciel, Would you believe I've never read the book.  I guess I should.  As you say, it's never too late.

And young Christian Slater... not the most painful on the eyes,

especially among the grotesques!

Ahem.

Yes, I love it too and have seen the film a number of times.
Well, with Sean Connery you would, wouldn't you?

Naut
It's never too late!  It's worth the cost of a night's rental just for the grotesque monks!  In fact, I may celebrate my Halloween with a re-run!

I read the book and really liked it, but never saw the movie. I guess I missed something...
