I used to
We had costume parties all the time. I always liked Carmen Miranda's birthday party.  I had a friend who dressed in all white garbage bags and came as poor white trash.  Another came dressed in kudz.  and another as a pregnant nun.  We used to do the Rocky Horror Picture Show every weekend.  That was back in the day.

I hate dressing up.
I do like costumes though...on other people, that is.  LOL

this year my costume will be Harley Quinn (from the Batman cartoon/comics), except not a one-piece.  last year i was the Corpse Bride, and actually won a contest with that costume. and to answer your question, i generally go with horror-themed costumes.

wish i owned a costume shop!

I went to a party with the theme of Robin Hood... Due to lack of sewing skills my friend and I decided to come as the wood... We had made the trunk very hard and the branches were made out of wire from a crown on our heads. It was a great success - untill we had to sit down for dinner.... the thought never crossed our minds...

Ciel, I haven't been in a costume in many a year, but they are fun to look at.  Two of my sons have several times come up with very good ones.

Aw, Naut, poor little Hieronymouse...

good costume concept, however!

I once dressed like an elf but all in grey--I was Peter Pan's Shadow.  No one appreciated it.

Hi, Uistlady!

Maybe the wish to have that license is why they choose such masks...  I guess some would do that just to see people go fearful--fun for them!  Others, as you say, really want to act the part, not just threaten.

Being in cars is like wearing a mask, too.

Ciel

I haven't been to many occasions where costumes were required, just clothes, lol. But I remember one I went to as the Pied Piper, wearing a strange hat and carrying a recorder, which I play badly. However, the piece de resistance of my costume was a little white mouse, that I acquired some time before, and which, in fact, had given me the idea for this costume in the first place.

The mouse, called Hieronymus (can't remember why), and I got along very well and he (I think it was a he, but I'm not sure) basically lived in my pockets for a while. He was not a great success at this party, however. He caused a lot of shrieking among the ladies, and especially one very interesting princess would have nothing to do with me because of him...

Sadly, not long thereafter Hieronymous disappeared. It was later speculated that on one of his explorations around the house he got into the garbage, couldn't find his way out, and ended up at the curb...

I hate when people wear scary masks
Hiding your face under a really scary mask is one of the most dislocating things I've noticed about people- it really spooks me; and it seems to give the wearers license to behave unacceptably. I don't mind when they wear smiley or pretty masks!
